With London now truly gripped by the fervour of the Olympics, it struck me that my first blog post as an Aspectus employee should focus on my experiences of my first two weeks in sporting terms. Well, it would be rude not to. With that in mind, I apologise for the following analogy.

Moving from in-house to the world of agency PR is akin, I feel, to going from competing in a flat race to the hurdles. As it is with athletics, whilst the principles of various disciplines may appear very similar to an outsider, the fast-paced atmosphere of agency PR (which I am enjoying greatly) requires a different approach to that of Public Affairs.

Usain Bolt, who would no doubt have the speed and stamina to compete at the top level in the 110m hurdles, would still need to perfect the technique required before he could compete with the Dayron Robles of this world. And so it is in PR. Not that I’m saying I’m the Usain Bolt of the communications world. Not at all, but my multi-disciplined approach must (surely?) qualify me as a latter-day Daley Thompson.

The education and experience that I’ve had in what is only my first two weeks in the job has well and truly helped me over the first hurdle and, courtesy of my great coaching staff, I feel I’ve left the first day starting blocks behind. But unlike an Olympic champion, this race won’t be won in the blink of an eye. Every day is a new experience and a new learning opportunity. And as the old saying goes, it’s a marathon not a sprint.
