Last week marked the first major event on the oil and gas calendar – Subsea Expo – Europe’s largest annual subsea exhibition. Despite the industry downturn, the event saw over 200 companies exhibit and a record-breaking 5,000 visitors pass through its door. The Aspectus oil and gas team was there to support clients, network with industry experts and understand first-hand the sector’s attitudes in this ‘lower for longer’ environment.

Since the sharp decline of the oil price, operators and service companies worldwide have held an unwavering focus on improving operational efficiencies. The theme for this year’s event was a ‘time for transformation’ – one which, if embraced, could signal a fundamental shift in the industry’s approach.

However, faced with tough times, the subsea sector seemed accepting, yet positive. Gone are the days of ‘it’s just a blip’, with companies now embracing a longer-term perspective focusing on sustainability, innovation and collaboration.

This positive, pioneering attitude is inspiring. And the conference sessions continued to echo this message with ‘technology spotlights’ on innovations including integrity management, ROV inspection and subsea processing.

During the three-day event, the Aspectus oil and gas team hosted a number of media interviews for existing clients and met some exciting new prospects. You might have even seen our team being interviewed for STV! We were also thrilled to attend the Subsea UK Awards, the most prestigious awards ceremony in the sector, which highlights the achievements of individuals and companies throughout the subsea industry. It was an exciting evening as we celebrated one of our clients winning two categories.

Despite being faced with constant change, the sector still has its eye on the future, and the final day of the event focused on the ‘subsea leaders of tomorrow’. Schools and university students were invited to visit the exhibition and learn about the diverse careers on offer in the subsea industry.

It’s so important for the industry to continue to look forward and to be ready for when the oil price rebounds. As Charles Darwin said: ‘It’s not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive, but those who can best manage change.’

And this is where Aspectus can help. We work with clients to grow their brand and maintain their relevance in a changing market. We do this by creating original, quality content, based on sharp, arresting and versatile messages. During challenging times and beyond, we make a measureable difference to organisations. Our approach takes the risk out of investment in communications by offering a performance-related model for our clients.
